Located a little over an hour south of Kansas City, at the intersection of two major transportation arteries, east/west U.S. Highway 54 and north/south U.S. Highway 69, Fort Scott is 18 miles west of the four-lane U.S. Highway 71.
The 200 acre industrial park, south of the city has fully developed sites with major rail and highway access. The airport, 3 miles west of the park, is open 7 days a week, has a 4500’ x 75’ runway that accommodates most turboprop and business jets and has a parallel taxiway. Fort Scott Municipal Airport with its lighted 4,500-foot asphalt runway safely accommodates jet engine aircraft. Pilot activated landing lights stay on for 15 to 20 minutes. Computerized weather service at terminal. Telephone available 24 hours a day and 24 hour service available on request. The terminal building is open 7 AM to 7 PM. Courtesy car is available.
Bourbon County’s educational system is known statewide for excellence. Uniontown high school boasts a National Teacher of the Year, a National History Teacher of the Year and other honors accorded to the teachers. The schools focus their curricula on science, math, and technology offering both college preparatory and educational technology programs. The Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce supports a Business-Education Partnership, Hire Education, whose goal is to create an environment of communication and understanding between business, teachers and students regarding the needs of business for the benefit of the students and business alike. One of the tasks of the partnership is the HIRE Education Business Open House for students and the HIRE Education Business Open House for teachers.
Fort Scott Community College offers traditional educational programs and training customized to meet the needs of business and industry.
