ELECTION NEWS FOR LOCAL OFFICES
The June 1 deadline is approaching soon for filing as a candidate for the November 2017 election. Per Bourbon County Clerk, Kendell Mason, the election will be a City and School election including all of the cities in Bourbon County, Fort Scott Community College, Southwind Extension District, USD-234 and USD-235 school districts. For the City of Fort Scott, there will be 3 City Commission positions on the ballot; 2 positions for Southwind Extension District; 3 positions for USD-234 school district; 3 positions for USD-235 school district; and 3 positions for the Fort Scott Community College Board of Trustees.
The Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce would like to encourage local residents with a passion for the continued growth and vitality of Fort Scott and Bourbon County to consider filing for office.
The deadline for filing as a candidate is Thursday, June 1 at noon. The number of candidates that file for office will determine if a primary election will be held August 1 or not. The date of the general election is Tuesday, November 7.
The Chamber encourages residents to spread the word to friends and neighbors that would be dedicated public servants and encourage them to consider filing as a candidate. The date for an election candidate forum will be announced in the future.

THE CITY OF FORT SCOTT
3 City Commission Members
2 of the positions are for 4 year terms
1 position is for a 2 year term
Filing fee of $20
Or
A petition signed by not less than 25 qualified electors of Fort Scott
&
A State filing fee of $50.
Filing deadline is noon June 1, 2017.
Filing location is with the Bourbon County Clerk, 210 S. National, Fort Scott, KS.
If more than 9 qualified candidates file there will be a Primary on August 1, 2017.
The General Election will be November 7, 2017.
THE SOUTHWIND EXTENSION DISTRICT
2 POSITIONS
Both positions are for 4 year terms
Filing fee of $20
Not able to file by petition.
Filing deadline is noon June 1, 2017.
Filing location is with the Bourbon County Clerk, 210 S. National, Fort Scott, KS.
If more than 6 qualified candidates file then there will be a Primary on August 1, 2017.
The General Election will be November 7, 2017.

Position #4 (284 petition signatures required)
Position #5 (267 petition signatures required)
Position #6 (436 petition signatures required)
All positions are for 4 year terms.
Filing fee of $20
Or
A petition signed by no less than 10% of qualified signatures of registered voters in the position for the USD #234 District.
Filing deadline is noon June 1, 2017.
Filing location is with the Bourbon County Clerk, 210 S. National, Fort Scott, KS.
If more than 3 qualified candidates file for any one position, then there will be a Primary on August 1, 2017.
The General Election will be November 7, 2017.
