The Fort Scott National Historic Site is seeking volunteers to put out flags for the Symbols of Sacrifice this Memorial Day weekend, see here for more info and contact Bristol at the Fort at 620-223-0310 or by email at bristol_sternfield@nps.gov:My name is Bristol and I am a park guide at Fort Scott National Historic Site. We are beginning to plan our annual Symbols of Sacrifice event for Memorial Day Weekend. This event is a way to celebrate and remember Memorial Day. There are over 7,000 American flags that cover the parade ground in an amazing and thoughtful display. I am reaching out to you as the leader of a group, club, or organization to let you know we would love your help! Here is the info:WHO: Yourself, your organization, any other volunteer groups or parties you may know. The more the merrier! Encourage everyone you know to attend; many hands make light work!WHAT: To create a display of thousands of American Flags that cover the parade ground in celebration of Memorial Day. Our dedicated facilities team creates a grid on the ground, and we simply insert the flags at all intersections. This is a longstanding tradition of Fort Scott, and people from states away come to marvel and pay respects on Memorial Day.WHERE: This event takes place at Fort Scott. Volunteers are encouraged to stop by the visitor center to check in, and then head to the parade ground where rangers will show you how to get started, the process is very easy!WHEN: The flags are placed in the ground Friday, May 26th, starting at 8 a.m. This opportunity lasts several hours, depending on how many hands we have. Groups and individuals are encouraged to show up any hour, on the hour, to help get everyone started at once! Can't help out Friday May 26th? No worries! We remove the display on Tuesday May 30th, and we would love your help, starting at 8 a.m. as well!HOW: Almost anyone can help! Volunteers simply insert the flags into the ground by hand or can help by creating holes with a lightweight metal rod to make insertion even easier! This can be done without much bending or mobility troubles, and the ground is flat and grassyInterested in helping? Great! Send me an email reply or call me at 620-223-0310 to let me know approximately how many folks you will be bringing. Please pass this announcement on through all your channels, we would like to have plenty of new faces at this event!Any questions? Let me know and I will do my best to help you out, otherwise we hope to see you May 26th!BristolBristol SternfieldPark GuideFort Scott National Historic SiteTell a Friend
